Love Points (LP) are a measurement of how far along in a relationship you are with one of the marriage candidates in SoS: FoMT.

As you increase your love points and heart level with each candidate, you can unlock special events.

Your relationships with all of your farm animals and pets also operate on love points too.

You might also get confused between friendship points and love points since they seem very similar. So let’s start by clarifying the differences and how these relationship mechanics work in the game.

What Are Friendship Points?

Your friendship points are indicated by musical icons, which can be seen in the Villager Relationship or Nature Sprites Relationship menu. You can have friendship levels with normal villagers, Nature Sprites, and marriage candidates.

The maximum friendship points you can have with one person is 255.

What Are Love Points?

You can only increase love points with the 16 marriage candidates available in the game.

The maximum love points you can have with one marriage candidate is 65,535.

But this is only visible for the 12 regular marriage candidates – however, there are 4 special marriage candidates in the game: Bon Viviant, Harvest Goddess, Huang, and Kappa.

These special marriage candidates do not display heart levels and you might not encounter them until late in the game, which makes the challenge of marrying them a lot harder.

How To Raise Love Points

Increase LP with villagers

Method 1: Talk To Them

The easiest and most cost-effective way to increase your love points with any candidate is to talk to them every day. It’s a very slow way to raise love points, though, so make sure to supplement your talking with other methods such as gifts.

Talking to any NPC will give you 1 friendship point and 200 love points (if they’re a marriage candidate).

Example: Kai is a seasonal villager, meaning he only comes to visit Mineral Town in the summer. Talking to him will give you one extra friendship point, so you’ll get 2 FP and 200 LP total!

Method 2: Give Them Gifts

Giving your bachelor or bachelorette a gift is definitely the way to go if you want to increase your heart levels fast.

You can give someone a gift only once a day (or at least, one gift per day will give you the most FP/LP).

Take a look at this table to find out how much FP and LP you’ll gain per type of gift:

Type of Gift Friendship Points Love Points
Favorite +9 FP +800 LP
Loved +9 FP +500 LP
Liked +3 FP +300 LP
Neutral +1 FP +100 LP

You can also buy wrapping paper from Jeff at the General Store to give your gift a 25% boost of extra FP/LP.

Gift wrap is available for purchase at 100 G per item.

Favorite +11.25 FP +1,000 LP
Loved +11.25 FP +625 LP
Liked +3.75 FP +375 LP
Neutral +1.25 FP +125 LP
Tip: Don’t forget to visit villagers on their birthdays! You can check our villagers listing to see everyone’s birthday. Giving someone a gift on their birthday will multiply the amount FP and LP you earn by 5x.

Method 3: Attend festivals

Just showing up to the town festivals can net you some bonus FP and LP.

Competitions and other general events will only give you friendship points (5 FP for showing up and another 20 FP for winning a contest, if applicable).

Method 4: The Harvest Goddess Event

This event triggers after you give the Harvest Goddess a total of 20 liked gifts.

After the usual cutscene when she appears to speak to you, she’ll ask if you’re interested in any of the marriage candidates.

You can then choose the bachelor or bachelorette you want to marry, and the Harvest Goddess will gift you 3,000 additional LP for that person!

Included in the list of candidates will be the Harvest Goddess herself and Kappa. In fact, this is one of their marriage requirements.

If you plan on marrying either Kappa or the Harvest Goddess in your playthrough, you have to choose either one of them at this exact moment.

Failing to choose them will mean that you won’t be able to court them for the rest of your save.

Increase LP with animals

Having a higher heart level with your animals means that they’ll give you bigger and higher quality animal products.

Each animal can have up to 250 love points, with each heart level indicating 25 LP. Animals bought from Mugi will only have 5 heart levels max.

You can also breed animals to increase their maximum heart level up to 10.

Here’s a list of daily activities you can do for your animals that will raise their heart level. You will get 1 LP for each task completed daily.

Action Requirements LP Earned
Talking or petting Once per day 1
Brushing Once per day 1
Grazing 5+ hours outside 1
Hand feeding Once per day 1
Note: Friendship decay does not apply to animals.

Increase LP with pets

Just like your farm animals, your pets also need love and attention. You can purchase pets from Van on the 15th of every season after giving the Harvest Goddess 30 gifts.

It’s important to increase your heart level with these pets, because you can’t buy more until you have 8 hearts (200 LP) or more with all your current pets.

How Heart Levels Work

There are 16 total marriage candidates in the game.

Out of all of them, only 12 have visible heart levels.

The special marriage candidates will have “invisible LP” which makes it harder to court them.

These special candidates are Bon Viviant, Kappa, Huang, and the Harvest Goddess.

You can still give them gifts to increase your love points, but you won’t be able to see your current heart level with any of them, and you won’t be able to experience heart events either.

For the regular marriage candidates, each new heart level unlocks an event for the bachelor or bachelorette in question.

During each event, you’ll be able to interact with them.

Choosing the right dialogue or action will give you a bonus 3,000 LP for that marriage candidate.

If you pick the wrong or negative option, though, -2,000 LP will be subtracted.

A marriage candidate will have 7 heart levels of different colors. You can view your current status with them in the Villager Relationships menu.

For each new heart level gained, you’ll unlock a special cutscene (heart event) with the character.

After you’ve obtained the Blue Feather and fulfilled all the marriage requirements, you can finally propose to your chosen candidate.

Note: Divorce is not possible in SoS:FoMT, so make sure you’re willing to commit before popping the question!

After you propose, a ceremony will take place at the church.

Marriage still requires you to maintain those love points, though.

Here are some events that can affect your heart level with your spouse:

Marriage Events
Event Requirements LP Earned (with positive response) LP Lost (with negative response)
Birthdays On your birthday or your spouse’s birthday
6:00 PM – 12:00 AM

Illness Ignoring your spouse for 10 days in a row N/A -2,000 LP

What is Friendship Decay?

In SoS:FoMT you also need to maintain your relationships as you’re trying to grow them.

Ignoring your friends or spouses will slowly make them lose their affection for you.

Animals and pets will not suffer from friendship decay. These are the things that will make you lose love points with a villager:

No matter what you do in the game, befriending the folks of Mineral Town is an essential part of any playthrough. And doing this can unlock more storylines as you play.
