Raising animals is a core part of farm life in Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, and it’s one of the most reliable ways to earn income.
Alongside your crops and fruits, animals produce valuable byproducts such as Milk, Eggs, and Wool.
This guide covers everything you need to know about raising farm animals, including animal care basics, how to raise their friendship and happiness stats, how animal breeding works, and other helpful tips.
Basic Mechanics & Stats
Farm animals are housed in barns on your farm.
At the start of the game you have one barn that can hold up to 4 chickens and 4 large animals. You can eventually upgrade to get a second barn.
Your barn includes all the necessary facilities for animal care such as feed silos, feeders, and a barn blackboard where you can view your animals’ stats.

Animal Mood Icons
Animals never get sick or die of old age, but their health can drop quickly if they’re left unfed or neglected.
Your barn animals will express their needs and statuses through bubble icons above their heads. These icons each indicate different conditions, so keep an eye out for them.

How To Raise Animal Friendship
Consistent daily animal care will boost your animals’ stats, which helps to maintain high-quality by-products.
After performing an action, a ❤️ icon will appear above the animal to indicate an increase in friendship.

You can keep your animals healthy and increase friendship through 5 simple actions:
- Feeding
- Petting
- Brushing
- Holding/picking up
- Herding
Feeding
Feeding is required for your animals to produce by-products. For example, a chicken that is not fed will not lay eggs the following day.
You’ll use animal food to feed your animals, with large animals eating Fodder and chickens eating Chicken Feed. Or you can send them all outside to graze since all animals will eat pasture grass.

Feeding ensures that you can get animal by-products each day, and it also improves your animals’ health and friendship stats.
There are several ways to feed your animals:
- Place feed in their feeders
- Hand-feed them for extra friendship
- Or let them graze outside
Petting
Petting is another way to increase friendship.
Each animal can be petted once per day. Simply approach the animal and press the action button without any tool equipped.

Brushing
Brushing can be done only on larger animals such as cows, sheep, and alpacas.
Use your Brush to groom any of these animals once per day. Brushing increases both health and friendship.

Holding
While large animals can be brushed, small animals such as chickens can be held.
Simply approach the chicken and press the action button without any tool equipped.

Herding
You can herd your animals in the barn or around your farm by ringing your bell.
Animals will respond to the bell and flock to you.
Herding is a quick way to increase friendship if you don’t have time to pet each animal individually.

How To Raise Animal Happiness
A happy animal produces more rare plus (+) by-products, such as Milk +, Egg +, or Wool +.
And there are only two ways to raise your animals’ happiness stat in Grand Bazaar:
- Letting them graze outside
- Eating certain foods with a buff that raises animal happiness
Grazing
Grazing is one of the most efficient ways to increase both happiness and friendship.
Your pets will automatically herd animals outside in good weather. But if you don’t have a pet yet, ring the bell (LSHIFT) near the barn’s exit to lead animals outside.

Animals should graze only on sunny or cloudy days. Grazing on rainy days decreases friendship and health.
And make sure to always return your animals to the barn before nightfall.
While grazing, animals will consume one tile of fodder. If no fodder is planted, they will eat wild grass instead. Fodder naturally spreads to adjacent tiles too, so it can grow on its own.

Food Buffs
You can eat foods that grant the Petting Happiness Up (Lv. 1-4) buff, which increases any animal’s happiness stat alongside their friendship stat when you pet them.
A ⭐ icon appearing above the animal after you pet them indicates an increase in happiness.

Breeding Basics
Requesting the breeding service at Ramon’s Critters will cause any selected farm animal to become pregnant.
During this time, the animal remains in the birthing pen inside the barn and will not get up, even to eat. Take the time to hand-feed, pet, and brush the animal during this period.

When a baby animal is born, they inherit their parent’s stats at a slightly reduced level. This makes breeding an effective way to start new animals with improved base stats.

Plus (+) By-products
Plus by-products (marked with +) are rarer, more valuable versions of normal by-products.
They sell for significantly higher prices and are also useful for cooking and gifting.

Animals have a base 4-8% chance to produce a plus by-product each day. This base rate varies depending on the animal.
You can further increase these chances with the following tips:
Tip #1: Increase your animal’s happiness as much as possible.
Happier animals have a higher chance of producing plus by-products, with greater chances at each new happiness level.

Tip #2: Enter & win Animal Shows. Each win grants your animal a higher chance of producing rare by-products.

Tip #3: Eat foods with the Petting Rare Item % buff, such as Mont Blanc Cake or Chocolate Cookies, before petting your animal to significantly increase your chances.

Tip #4: Visit Kagetsu for a random blessing. One of her blessing effects is Petting Rare Item %.
This blessing can even stack with the food buff for even better chances of rare animal byproducts.
