Around Zephyr Town you’ll often spot many different bugs & frogs outside.

These various bugs & frogs can actually be caught, collected, and sold at your bazaar stall.

This page offers a guide to the mechanic of catching bugs in Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, with details on the different types of bugs and some tips to help your bug collection flourish.

How to Catch Bugs

All bugs can be caught using just your hands — no tools needed!

Here’s how:

Step 1: Spot the bug – Small ground bugs like grasshoppers are easy to overlook, but there are also bugs that can spawn on trees and in the air. So keep your eyes open as you explore.

Step 2: Approach slowly Walk toward the bug as slow as you can. Avoid running, since sudden movements will scare it away.

Step 3: Catch it – Once you’re close enough, press the action button to catch it.

For bugs flying in the air you’ll want to jump and then press the action button immediately after.

Tip: Keep an eye on your Stamina, as catching bugs actually does consume energy.

Bug Rarity Levels

When caught, bugs are stored in your bag with a “cage” icon.

The color of the cage indicates the bug’s rarity.

Cage Color Rarity

Common
Blue cage

Uncommon
Red cage

Red

Rare

Note that the cage color relates to the rarity of the bug as a whole, but not necessarily its spawn rate.

For example: there are rare bugs (like an Emperor Dragonfly) that have very unique and difficult-to-trigger spawn conditions, but when those conditions are met it actually spawns fairly often in that narrow window.

Hard-to-Find Bugs

Some bugs are hard to find and appear only under specific conditions.

Here’s a short list of the rarest bugs around the map.

Bug Conditions
Emperor Butterfly Only appears near Field 3 on your farm. Unlock by purchasing the Extra Field Expansion from Wilbur’s Workshop
Helena Morpho Butterfly Found near the Beekeeping Field, but only after purchasing the Bigger Beekeeping Expansion from Heavy Lifters
Bagworm Moth Hangs from the tree in front of the Nature Sprites’ house during Winter only. Easy to miss, since players rarely visit this spot
Spotted Frog Appears only during a Summer hurricane, near the Upstream pond in the Mountain Area
Evening Cicada Can be found on a tree hidden behind Sunnywood Hotel. Appears for only 2 hours during Summer, from 4:00 PM to 5:59 PM

Catching Tips & Strategies

Tip #1: Check at night for beetles and fireflies. Most only appear after 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM.

Tip #2: Rainy days are the only times when you can find frogs.

So head out during rainy days to catch Tree Frogs, White-Lipped Tree Frogs, and Green Tree Frogs.

Tip #3: Pay attention to specific date ranges! Some bugs only appear during the first or second half of the month. You can visit our detailed bug wiki pages for exact spawn conditions.

Tip #4: Winter is the quietest season for bugs. Only a few year-round species (such as locusts and ladybugs) remain active in the cold weather.

Tip #5: Use the Trends system for bonus income from your catches.

Bug trends are also season-specific:

  • Ladybugs and Butterflies in Spring
  • Tree Bugs and Fireflies in Summer
  • Dragonflies and Grasshoppers in Fall
