In Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, relationships are tracked through Friendship Points (also called Heart Levels or Love Points). You can increase a villager’s FP as you interact with them, give them gifts, and participate in events.
Building a close relationship with your fellow villagers is key to unlocking new events, recipes, and rewards.

Understanding Friendship Points
In the in-game character menu, friendship points appear as heart icons, but they display differently depending on the character:
- Marriage candidates show colored hearts that fill and change color as their FP increases.
- Regular villagers show peach colored hearts which fill up as their FP increases, but these hearts never change color.

The game does not display the exact number of FP anywhere in the menu. Instead, your progress is represented by how many hearts are filled in.
As you raise these values, you’ll unlock new dialogue, cutscenes, and (for romance candidates) heart events.
Ways to Increase Friendship Level
Each NPC’s FP value will increase through any of these actions:
- Talking to them daily
- Giving them gifts they like
- Taking part in festivals
- Completing their requests
- Answering certain dialogue choices for their events
Getting a full heart level increase will usually take many actions, so it can take some time to see meaningful increases in a villager’s FP.

Many recipes offer the Chat Friendship Boost buff, which increases the total amount of FP you gain when you talk to villagers. The highest level of this buff (Lv. 4) can be activated by eating any of these 6 recipes:
Love/Romance Progression
With eligible marriage candidates, their hearts in the character menu appear in different colors. Each new heart level is associated with a different color visible in the menu.
| Icon Color | FP Hearts |
|---|---|
White |
0 hearts (up to 1) |
Purple |
1 heart (up to 2) |
Blue |
2 hearts (up to 3) |
Light Blue |
3 hearts (up to 4) |
Green |
4 hearts (up to 5) |
Light Green |
5 hearts (up to 6) |
Yellow |
6 hearts (up to 7) |
Orange |
7 hearts (up to 8) |
Pink |
8 hearts (up to 9) |
Red |
9 hearts (up to 10) |
At the yellow heart level with any marriage candidate, your relationship progression includes a unique choice. After viewing their yellow heart event, you can tell the character that you are either:
- Falling in love with them, or
- See them as a great friend
After you choose, their title in the character menu updates to either “your newfound love” or “a trusted friend”. Love points can still increase normally afterward, but the title reflects how you defined the relationship.

Once you raise a candidate’s Love Points high enough and reach the required heart level, you can present them with a Blue Feather to propose. If they accept, you’ll begin the process leading to marriage.
Gift Preferences
Villagers have different reactions to gifts, which affects how many Friendship Points they gain.
Every gift falls into one of 8 preference categories for each villager. These preferences are listed below:
| Gift Reaction | FP Gain |
|---|---|
| Substantially large increase | |
| Very large increase | |
| Large increase | |
| Small increase | |
| Small reduction | |
| Large reduction | |
| Very large reduction | |

You can give one gift per day, with bonuses on birthdays and some festivals.

Checking Heart Levels
You can check your current FP progress in the character menu, or when speaking to a villager. In their dialogue box you’ll see a single heart beside their name.

This heart in their dialogue box fills up according to your current relationship progress with them.
For marriage candidates, this dialogue heart icon also displays the color of their current heart level. This makes it easy to see where you stand at a glance.
